Galloway Springs, located just south of Bridgetown in Western Australia’s Southern Forests, is a thriving farm and community hub where diversity and sustainability come together. Established in 2016 by Raquel and Murray Johnson, the farm has grown into a dynamic operation producing high-quality, spray-free produce, including their signature Italian Purple garlic. The couple’s journey from city life to regenerative farming highlights their vision and deep commitment to the land.
When the Johnsons left Perth for the 200-acre property, they embraced a holistic approach to farming that values balance, connection, and long-term sustainability. Their practices incorporate regenerative and rotational grazing techniques, integrating animals like cows, sheep, and chickens into pasture management systems to improve soil health and water retention. The garlic, one of their standout crops, reflects this care and dedication. Each of the 30,000 cloves is hand-planted, harvested, and processed on-site, ensuring a high-quality, spray-free product that has become a favourite among customers.
Raquel and Murray chose the Italian Purple variety for its versatility and enduring popularity. Known for its long shelf life and ease of growing, it is ideal for both cooking and planting. The garlic is hand-dried on wire racks before being prepared for market using innovative equipment shared with a local garlic co-operative. Customers are encouraged to explore the many culinary possibilities of this versatile crop, whether fermenting it in honey, infusing it in oil, or planting it as seed garlic. For a quick family favourite, Raquel recommends honey soy garlic chicken wings—a simple dish that highlights the garlic’s robust flavour.
While garlic is a highlight, Galloway Springs offers much more. Their farm stall is a bustling outlet where visitors can purchase fresh vegetables, pastured chickens, and locally sourced seasonal produce. It’s also a collaborative space, supporting other growers who share the Johnsons’ values. Leasing part of their land to vegetable and garlic growers, as well as their daughter Emily’s chicken enterprise, ensures that Galloway Springs remains a hub of community and innovation.
The farm’s agri-tourism offerings add another dimension to the experience. Visitors can enjoy on-site accommodation through a partnership with Into the Wild Escapes, which features a tiny cabin overlooking a tranquil dam. The converted shearing shed hosts workshops and events, providing an immersive way for guests to connect with farming and food production. These initiatives are part of the Johnsons’ broader mission to inspire better food choices by educating consumers about where their food comes from and how it’s grown.
For Raquel, running the farm shop and events is not just a business; it’s a way to connect with people and share the story of their farm. “We value community, transparency, and integrity,” she explains. “Through our work, we want to inspire better food-producing practices and make good food more accessible to everyone.” Murray, meanwhile, focuses on improving soil health and perennial pastures, bringing his entrepreneurial spirit and practical skills to the daily operations. Together, they embody a partnership that balances vision with execution, heart with head.
Living and working in the Southern Forests has been a transformative experience for the Johnsons. The region’s fertile soil, supportive community, and temperate climate have been instrumental in shaping their approach to farming. “People tell us we’re living the dream,” Raquel says. “And they’re right—it’s about connection. Connection to the land, food, and community. That’s what makes this place so special.”
Galloway Springs is more than a farm; it’s a vibrant ecosystem that reflects the Johnsons’ passion for regeneration, sustainability, and quality. Their garlic, along with their other produce, can be purchased directly from their farm stall or through their online store.
